TruePath Recorder is a local-only macOS application. We do not collect, transmit, or store any of your data on our servers. Your recordings stay on your device.
What we collect
Nothing.
TruePath Recorder runs entirely on your Mac and does not connect to any TruePath-operated server. We collect:
- No personal information
- No usage analytics or telemetry
- No crash reports (unless you choose to send one by emailing us)
- No recordings, screenshots, or media you create with the app
- No microphone audio, system audio, or screen content
- No identifiers, advertising IDs, or fingerprints
What stays on your device
The following information is stored locally on your Mac and never leaves it:
- Recordings. Saved to
~/Movies/TruePathRecorder/ by default, or to a custom folder you pick. We use a sandbox-safe security-scoped bookmark to remember your folder choice across launches — only macOS sees this; we never read it.
- Preferences. Settings (cursor visibility, codec, countdown, etc.) live in your Mac's standard UserDefaults store under
com.joytruepath.recorder.
- Crash recovery markers. When a recording is in progress, the app writes a small lock file next to the recording so we can detect orphaned files after a crash. These are deleted on clean shutdown.
Permissions we request
TruePath Recorder uses standard macOS permission prompts (called TCC). You can revoke any of these at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
- Screen Recording — required to capture your display. Apple's system prompt will ask the first time you start a recording.
- Microphone — only requested if you toggle "Include Microphone" on. Off by default.
- Input Monitoring — only requested if you toggle "Show Keystrokes on Screen" on. Off by default. Used solely to render keystroke overlays during recording; we do not store keystrokes anywhere.
- Files and Folders — granted via macOS's standard "Choose Folder" dialog when you pick a custom export location.
Network usage
The app itself makes no outbound network requests during normal operation. The only times it opens a URL are:
- When you click "Send Feedback" — opens your default mail client with
[email protected]
- When you click "View Changelog" or "Brand Guidelines" — opens this website in your default browser
Each of those actions is initiated by you. The app does not phone home, check for updates, or send any data to us automatically. App Store updates happen through the Mac App Store, which Apple manages separately under Apple's privacy policy.
Third parties
We do not use any third-party SDK, analytics provider, advertising network, or backend service. The app is a single signed binary that runs in Apple's sandbox.
Children
TruePath Recorder is rated 4+ and is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change the data practices described here, we will update this page and the "Effective" date at the top. Material changes will also be announced in the app's "What's New" sheet on first launch after the update.
